War Bride
drawing - color pencil on paper
36″ × 48″
This drawing is from a photo dated 1944. It is the wedding of my mother’s childhood friend. My mother is behind to the left of the bride and groom, looking back and smiling as the rice flung from the woman on the far left strikes both her and the wedding couple. She is wearing the dress that she would be married in a year later...and that I would be married in thirty four years later! As I was drawing this, I was struck by how young they all looked, and how happy.
